Legitimacy amidst moving companies can be sketchy depending on where you look. Many customers are understandably wary when hiring moving companies because they don’t want to be taken advantage of. Scams are all too prevalent in this industry. So, don’t let a moving scam ruin your next relocation. Take the steps to properly vet your movers and make the right decision.

Check whether the mover is licensed and insured: All it takes is a phone call to the company itself or to the USDOT website to run a search. Just remember that interstate movers must register with the Federal government, with their information available within the U.S. DOT system, but local movers are regulated by the state. Check with your state to investigate any local mover you may have your eye on.

Read up on complaints: Check for official complaints filed with the FMCSA and check with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to see if they are accredited. Look up reviews online such as Yelp and ask your friends and family for personal recommendations. Don’t forget to check social media sites. Just take all posted reviews with a grain of salt. Many of them can be scams or fakes. Personal recommendations are the most reliable. It’s also a good idea to make sure they are members of the American Moving & Storage Association.

Ask for an in-person inspection: If a moving company says they can give you an accurate estimate over the phone, go on to the next one on the list. There’s really no way of knowing exactly how much your move will cost unless the movers come out to your home to inspect your belongings. Get at least three quotes from moving companies and then evaluate all estimates. If the company won’t give you an estimate in writing, this could be a red flag.

Check on professionalism: Aside from licensing, it’s important to check whether your mover has an actual business address with a real office. No home base often equals a fly-by-night mover that can’t be trusted to stick around. Ask for a bill of lading, make sure they wear uniforms and have marked trucks, and evaluate their estimate to make sure it’s not too good to be true.

Evaluate prices: Speaking of estimates, you may be swayed by a very low price. Take caution when jumping on these types of offers. Yes, they may seem low at first. But there may be hidden costs that the company will surprise you with later. Or, the offer may be low because the mover wants you to pay everything up front in cash. Never do that. They will likely take your money and never be seen again. According to the FMCSA, movers are required by law to deliver your goods for no more than 10 percent above the price of a nonbinding estimate – something known as the 110 percent rule.
