If it’s time for you to move, you may be in the research phase of choosing a moving company that can help you in this daunting task. There are plenty of movers around, but they’re not all created equally. Some are fly-by-night operations that ask for money up front and then ditch you come moving day; fortunately, these movers don’t stay in business long. However, it’s still important to thoroughly research your movers before settling on one. Here’s what to look for when choosing a moving company:
Stellar Reputation
As said above, sub-par movers don’t stay in business long, especially if they have shady business practices. But the line isn’t always so cut and dried. Anyone can provide basic moving services, where movers pick up boxes, put them in the truck and unload them at your destination. However, you want to choose a moving company that goes above and beyond normal service and takes the utmost care to wrap your valuables, ask where you want them, treat your property and belongings with respect, and offer affordable prices that won’t leave you broke. Listen to what friends and family have to say. Get word of mouth recommendations and check online reviews to get a good overview of their business practices.
Investigate the Company
Pretend you’re a detective. Check the company’s background, and make sure it is licensed, insured and bonded. This is for both parties’ protection. Making sure the company in question is operating legally in your state will lend credibility to their reputation, as will many years in business in the same location and any local awards they may have received.
Go Local
While nationally-known movers are backed by reputation, they often cost more and aren’t always as familiar with your immediate area as local movers. When you go with local movers, they live and work in the communities they service. They may work harder to ensure your satisfaction, as a result, with more of a vested interest in their treatment of customers. They know the roadways and neighborhoods well, and can therefore be a wealth of local information in a time of flux for you.
Reasonable Rates
When asking around for rates, look for middle-of-the-road, reasonable rates. Any dirt-cheap prices should be a red flag to you, as should sky-high ones. Exceptionally low rates that are too good to be true usually are, and may translate to sub-par service by a company that may not even be licensed. Look for a mover that is up-front about their pricing. You don’t want to be hit with hidden surprises later on. Moving companies with a consistent price base tend to be more reliable.
BBB Member
Ask your moving company what their rating is with the Better Business Bureau. You want to make sure they’re in good standing before hiring them.
Take these tips seriously when on the lookout for a reputable mover. You will be thankful later!
